Use it when

You already ship from a React codebase and want designers, PMs, and engineers in one desktop IDE—PRDs linked to canvases, pixel tweaks that write to source, and agents that turn Slack or GitHub feedback into reviewed pull requests.

What it does well

  • Canvas: Figma-style infinite surface where each frame is a live iframe of a real route or React component—style, drag, and prop edits write back to source
  • Storyboards as code in tempo/designs/canvases/; dev server hot-reload keeps design and repo in sync (Vite, Next.js, configurable scripts)
  • Docs for PRDs/specs linked to chat, canvas, and issues; built-in Kanban ties cards to branches, PRs, and designs
  • Chat: Claude or Codex in isolated git worktrees so destructive agent edits never touch your main tree
  • Background agents (Triage, Spec and Design, Bug Fixer, Feature Builder) triggered from Slack, GitHub, schedules, or assigned issues

Skip it when

  • You have no existing repo or need a chat-only greenfield app factory (Softgen/Lovable)—Tempo assumes your codebase is the source of truth
  • Your stack is not React-oriented or you cannot run a local dev server Tempo can attach to
  • You want Figma-only handoff, IDE-native .pen files (pen.dev), or a lightweight visual editor without specs/issues/agent factory scope
  • You need fully self-serve enterprise pricing on the public site—Agent+ and Hire a Human tiers are sales-led (book a call)
  • Complex agent work on free inference may trail paid Claude or Codex—docs recommend those for longer tasks
